J.J. McDermott (1891-1971)

Born in Philadelphia, McDermott won the 17th US Open in 1911, making him the first American born player to do so. At the age of 19, he is still the youngest man to capture the Championship, and he successfully defended it the following year. McDermott, along with most of the early american golfers, learned his craft as a caddy under the tutelage of Scottish Immigrants who resided in the US as the golf pros of the original American Country Clubs. His two championships, along with Francis Ouimet's in 1913 are cited as the events that sparked widespread American interest in the sport.
